Grand Targhee Randonee Race - January 10, 2009
Well, one year ago I did this race after spending the fall weight lifting, 10 lbs heavier and with little rando-specific training behind me. I did alright but hit the wall 15 minutes from the end and lost 2 places at the finish. It was a 2-man team race and my partner was disappointed. This year I vowed to be ready.
I needed a new partner and I found one in Jared Inouye from SLC. He is a tough sonofabitch and a great skier. Despite what I felt was a solid preparation, I was afraid that he would still work me over. At 47 years old, training is going to get me only so far against younger competitors. As it turned out, we were perfectly matched and never really waited for eachother more than a few seconds. Read Jared's blow by blow here.
I have to thank Mark Twight at Gym Jones for his guidance in my preparation this year. Seems like I'm on the right track. Of course, this was just one event of several this season and we'll have to wait and see how things shake out. Stay tuned. - Brian
