Brian in Alaska Winter, Chugach Mountains, Jewel Glacier, back country skiing

Most of my skiing in Alaska has been solo missions so it was nice to get out with my partner Marc today. He works harder than me and juggles ski time with family commitments. I get great enjoyment in facilitating good times for guys like him. Guess it's the guide in me. Plus, photos are usually better with friends in them.

Anyway, today's weather was supposed to be crappy but, as you can see, was anything but. The usual gloom and fog hung over Girdwood as we drove through and we joked about keeping residents' serotonin levels low and caffeine levels high just to manage. Oh yeah, and a healthy intake of MFT (Matanuska Thunder Fuck - the strong, local cannabis favored by many in these parts) to keep the bad attitude in check this time of year.

We were headed back to the Jewel Glacier and Jewel Peak since I knew it was good and didn't get skied much after hitting it yesterday. Marc hadn't been up there yet, and I love showing friends new terrain.

We popped out of the clouds before we got to the parking lot and the rest of the day was just like yesterday - light winds, ample pow and few people. Even saw a few friends on our way out. With Marc's time constraints we left early so he could get back before the day was gone. I hate getting up early except to ski. The light is always better then and I'm happy to have made the effort. I just wanted to share a few shots from the outing. Enjoy.
