Christmas Presents

Santa was good to me. For all the missteps I’ve had in Alaska with the rainy summer and dry winter, last week’s trip to the Tetons made the world right. Once again, emotions got the better of me staring out the window of the United flight as I descended into the valley on Christmas morning. Perfect blue bird skies and nearly two feet of fresh snow greeted me when I debarked. I pinched myself.

Going and Knowing

Our high point for the day above Center Ridge, Turnagain Pass, AKYou don’t know ‘til you go. Isn’t that what we always say? It’s the war cry for leaving the house for an adventure when forces and opinions conspire against doing so. It was my mantra this morning as I walked out into frigid sub-zero temps under cobalt skies and headed to Turnagain Pass with Matt.

Spring Ritual

S-Couloir, North Face Ptarmigan PeakLast night I participated in fun Anchorage spring time ritual for a small group of local die hard skiers. After a partner texted me the other day that late evening conditions were prime on the S-Couloir on Ptarmigan Peak, I waited for a weather window to have a go. In spite of the weather gurus predicting nothing but rain for the next 10 days, yesterday cleared perfectly in the afternoon and at 7pm, I made a call and secured a mountain bike for the approach.

Tremors in the Force

It was time for a gut check. I needed to step back and look at the bigger picture. It's true. I was fit and ready to skimo race. I've been training all season and the upcoming Wasatch Powder Keg was going to be my final race of the year. I was facing the last week before the event and it was time to rest. The problem was that this taper was corresponding with a spell of splitter high pressure which had the high peaks drawing my thoughts and ambitions like the sirens in Homer's Odyssey.
